While traditional paper timelines were confined to the classroom, online timelines can be published, embedded and linked within a class blog, social media, or website, allowing students to view and learn from each others creation. In this session we will explore how students can create multimedia timelines to demonstrate content knowledge and collaboration.
Learning Outcomes
After this session, BOOTCAMP 2013 participants will be able to:
Integrate multimedia timelines in innovative ways to support student collaboration and demonstrate content knowledge;
connect to and learn from other educators (attitude*);
reflect on and align digital concepts and tools to your content area (Common Core and/or Essential Standards) during digitally supported learning activities (behavior*);
apply new skills for one or more of the select digital tools: Capzules and TimeGlider (skills*).

I. TIMELINE 101 | 5 minutes
Teachers have always used timelines to allow students to visualize a series of events and ideas. Students can visualize the sequence of events of a given topic or time period, identify cause and effect relationships, gain a sense of scale in comparing different eras, and summarize a topic or period of time. Online timelines allow students to create content for others to use and learn from and also provide the possibility of collaboration.
II. How to Integrate Online Timelines | 15 minutes
Through projection in a classroom setting, teachers can have students make generalizations about an era, identify cause and effect relationships, and determine if events are interrelated or isolated. But what other ways can multimedia timelines be integrated into your curriculum to support student collaboration and demonstrate content knowledge? Let's think outside the box.
There are many online timeline builders to choose from: each are a bit different. Below are two specific tools for the creation of an online timeline. With a partner, explore these resources and consider which resource digitally supports the learning activities in your content area?
Events can contain images and descriptions, and Capzles allows for files and media to be added to the timeline. The background of the timeline can be customized, and a music playlist can be added. Capzles requires a login with an active email account. Other users can collaborate on a Capzles timeline with a public setting, inviting friends, or by creating a group login.
